The unit is currently vacant and would allow Costa to relocate to the unit and would provide an outdoor seating area. Planning officers have recommended the plans for approval, however councillors will decide on the application at the meeting on 2 June.

A report by planning officers, which recommends approval for the scheme, states: “As part of the wider redevelopment of the former Debenhams store, 34 Bakers Lane now sits in a prominent location with its existing side elevation facing the new cinema and dining complex.

“As such, the proposals seek to enhance the side appearance of 34 Bakers Lane which aim to not only improve the building, but also create an active frontage to enhance the wider external public realm space and increase permeability.

“Overall, in principle policy terms the scheme fully complies with adopted planning policies which seek to provide a vibrant and well used city centre.”

The statement submitted by the applicant, Lichfield District Council states: “The proposed development will ensure the ongoing vitality and viability of Lichfield City Centre, by repurposing vacant retail floorspace and enabling it to be transformed into a high-quality commercial space which will make a contribution to employment and wage generation.

“The proposal will act as a new destination location within the City Centre, increasing the attraction and footfall through the introduction of new uses which will have spin-off benefits with neighbouring operators and ensure that the wider regeneration aspirations of the Council can be delivered.

“The proposal supports the use of high-quality public realm that is being delivered and contributes positively to the wellbeing and visual amenity of the centre, supporting strong, vibrant, and healthy communities. The proposal promotes social and recreational facilities that will enhance the sustainability of communities.”
