The plans for two new units on Stafford Road in Lichfield have been submitted for consideration by Lichfield District Council.

The development would see the construction of two new buildings to provide 24 hour a day residential care for young, highly vulnerable children. However it would involve the demolition of the former fireplace shop.

The site was previously granted permission for two residential units in 2024, however no work has been carried out.

Each of the two units proposed would accommodate one child. The application notes that the site would be transformed with significant landscaping that would benefit future occupiers.

However, Martin McQuaide has objected to the scheme and says he objects in the strongest terms. He said: “We were told that five private dwellings were going to be built. This was then changed to four. Why was this a change of use and why were we not consulted. My wife and I, do not want this, and we object in the strongest of terms.”

The design and access document by the applicant, Matilda Homes Ltd, states: “This proposal would create a nurturing, supportive and safe environment where every young person can thrive, grow and achieve their full potential. The end-user would take a tailored and holistic approach supported by specialist staff, who work in partnership with communities and local authorities.

“The proposal would help support the Council’s housing strategy for children by providing a design and build care home with appropriate space, parking and facilities. At the same time, it would reduce the demand to convert residential properties to care homes, therefore protecting existing housing stock.

“A purpose-built children’s care home provides the facilities to give vulnerable children the chance to develop in a safe and friendly environment. The site is situated within a highly sustainable location with local amenities and regular bus services on the doorstep.

“The proposal would have no adverse impacts to the local highway, heritage assets or adjoining neighbours. There is adequate space around buildings and the rear gardens with private amenity for children to support their mental health and wellbeing.”

Planning officers at Lichfield District Council are now set to consider the application.
