Grasp Homes has submitted plans to City of Wolverhampton Council asking for permission to build six new units at the Sutherland Industrial Estate off Bilston Road, Wolverhampton.

The industrial estate in Cooper Street, near the city’s Monmore Green Stadium, currently has five units with the new proposals including plans for a further six units measuring between 236 and 490 square metres.

The expansion would create nearly 2,000 square metres more floorspace.

A total of 60 parking spaces and bays for nine lorries have also been included in the plans.

The site was used by timber merchant National Hickman as a storage warehouse and yard but many of the structures were demolished last year with little evidence of its former use remaining. Several other buildings in Cooper Street formerly used by National Hickman now either lie empty or have been demolished.

The six new units would be built on much of the hard standing left empty after the storage was pulled down. Some of the former warehouses are now occupied by wholesalers.

A statement included with the application said: “The site is safeguarded as a local employment area, with the proposal retaining and enhancing the existing employment space whilst delivering six new industrial units, ensuring long-term viability of the site.

“The scheme incorporates modern industrial architecture, improves the site layout and enhances landscaping, aligning with design policies maintaining efficient accessibility and servicing.

“The proposed density ensures the efficient use of the site, whilst having a massing and height consistent with the surrounding industrial area.

“The proposal provides adequate parking, including HGV and cycle spaces whilst maintaining existing access arrangements.”
