Latest plans submitted for former Wolverhampton pub as part of £120m regeneration

Housing developer Keon Homes has submitted plans on behalf of City of Wolverhampton Council to build 32 new flats on the site of the former Duke of York pub on the corner of Wednesfield Road and Inkerman Street, Wolverhampton.

The planning application for the former Duke of York is the latest part of a £120m regeneration plan for the Wolverhampton estate and follows new council housing recently being built on the estate for the first time in more than 50 years.

City of Wolverhampton Council said the plans for the one and two-bed flats form the second phase of its regeneration work in Heath Town – which includes 120 new homes.

Work could start by the end of the year, the council added.

Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city housing, said: “One of our key priorities is to increase the number of good homes in well connected neighbourhoods across the city.

“The regeneration of Heath Town is helping achieve that and it is heartening to see how it is changing the lives of families for the better.

“This planning application is part of the next phase of our transformation of the estate, which is being built on the strong sense of community at Heath Town, where we have delivered improvements and new homes the residents can be proud of.”

The site off Wednesfield Road was home to the Duke of York until 2010 when the watering hole was demolished.

An 18-year-old was left fighting for his life after being shot in the back outside the pub in 2008.

The first phase of the work in Heath Town saw 40 new council homes built in Hobgate Road and Chervil Rise.

Several old and empty buildings were demolished in Heath Town as part of the £120m work and a number of existing residential blocks have also been refurbished in recent years.
