Hundreds of new homes proposed for farmland on edge of Staffordshire town

More than 500 new homes have been earmarked for land on the western edge of Stone.

Bloor Homes’ proposal for land off Eccleshall Road, east of Micklow House Farm, also includes a new first school.

Stafford Borough Council has received a request for a screening opinion for the proposed development, which relates to whether or not a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be required. The site is currently farmland, located to the west of the new Udall Grange housing development on the edge of Walton.

A document submitted to the borough council as part of the screening request said: “It is the intention that an outline application will be submitted in support of a residential development of up to 505 dwellings, a first school, open space, landscaping, associated infrastructure and works, including earthworks and drainage on the site. The site is well situated to provide access to local amenities and employment opportunities and is accessible by sustainable travel modes.

“The proposed development will provide high quality design which will complement and enhance the existing settlement edge of Stone. New residential areas will be designed to protect the residential amenity of existing neighbours.

“The proposed development will result in the development of an arable agricultural field (greenfield) parcel and will inevitably alter the land use of the site (if planning permission is granted). However, the proposed development will seek to retain existing trees and vegetation (where possible) and to enhance the ecological value of the site through a landscape planting strategy.”
