Three houses and a smaller storage unit on Lichfield Road, Walsall Wood will be demolished, along with the pub, to make way for the supermarket.

The development site is located between number 15 Lichfield Road and the Methodist Church, just half a mile down the road from the new Lidl store at the former Horse and Jockey pub.

Aldi said once the new store is complete, up to 50 new jobs will be made available to local people.

A consultation was carried out ahead of the application, where three quarters of the respondents were in favour of a new Aldi at the Royal Exchange site.

A number of comments stated there was no need for another supermarket, some had concerns about the loss of housing and the loss of a public house.

Agent Avison Young said: “The majority of responses to the consultation were positive, highlighting the positive benefits of the scheme including the creation of jobs, investment in the local area, and reducing the need to travel further afield to access supermarket provision.”

Once the development is complete there will be 109 car parking spaces available, including six disabled and four EV spaces. Access will be from Lichfield Road only.

Opening times for the new store would be 8am to 10pm Mondays to Saturdays and 9am to 6pm on Sundays.
