Planning officers at City of Wolverhampton Council decided the scheme for 11 apartments in the former Press Computer Systems offices on Castle Street could go ahead under permitted development rules.

Applicant BAAZ Property Holdings applied for permission to convert office space across the ground and first floor of the building into living space in October.

A scheme of alterations to windows were also included in the proposals to provide extra daylight and ventilation for a mix of one and two bedroom properties set to be constructed.

The scheme was approved as a so-called "Class MA" development, permitted development legislation brought in in 2021 which allows developers to re-purpose vacant commercial premises for residential living accommodation without needing full planning permission.

Rules around the amount of space which could be converted under Class MA permitted development applications were relaxed earlier this year.

A decision notice from the city council said: "Prior Approval is Required and Approved for the development described in the above submission. Accordingly, the applicant may proceed with the development in accordance with the details submitted.

"The developer has provided sufficient relevant information material to the determination of this proposal and it is acceptable."
