A new estate with 700 homes is set to be built north of Stafford

The project for 100 acres of land between Beaconside and the future HS2 line forms part of the borough council’s vision for more homes.

Formal approval for the scheme, which will also include a care home and a primary school, was given by Stafford Borough Council this week.

It follows 10 months of discussions between the applicant Akzo Nobel UK and the council over developer contributions which will be made to roads and education.

It will be on land north of Marston Grange and will be next to a 250-home estate being built off Beaconside by developer Taylor Wimpey.

Ward Councillor Ray Sutherland said: “I was supportive of the proposal when it was approved back in December and I look forward to work starting at the site.”

He added: “This is an area which was earmarked by the council for housing. What is new here is a proposal has now been fully agreed on.”

The development will be made up of a mix of two, three and four-bed homes which will be built around a central park.

There will also be space for shops, restaurants and takeaways.

Fabric manufacturers Akzo Nobel UK acquired the land in 1998 after it bought out fellow fabric company Courtaulds, which had the site in its assets portfolio.

The firm will now sell the site to a developer which will go ahead and build the project.
