The homes at 15 Martin Street are described as being part of a ‘stunning and prestigious development’ in the town centre.

A two-bed flat in the block is up for sale for £295,000 in what used to be a Staffordshire County Council building and register office – but is now dubbed Martin Street Mansions.

One bedroom flats are also up for grabs in the building from a starting price of £155,000 – rising to £190,000.

Councillor Christine Baron, ward member for Forebridge, which covers the town centre, said: “The flats will bring people into the town and hopefully they’ll nip in and use the shops – adding more vibrancy it will be good for the economy too.

“It’s better than having them standing empty.

“I can understand why its been done because they’ve got a building which isn’t being used.

The Martin Street Mansions includes nine apartments

“With them being luxurious apartments they’re not going to let anyone move into them.

“I don’t think there will be problems with people walking past the windows – the most they’re going to get is council workers who work nearby.

“Martin Street isn’t really a thoroughfare street for the town, they usually use Market Street.”

Prices from £160,000 for one-beds, to £295,000 for two-beds

The asking prices are significantly more than average for a flat in the ST16 area of town, which is just below £120,000.

Plans to convert the old office block were submitted in 2015.

Built in 1913, the building was listed in February 1994 – similarly to 16 Martin Street, which could also be turned into flats after the same developer submitted plans last year.

The proposals would see the building, built later in 1926, converted into 17 apartments featuring four studios, 11 one-bedroom and two two-bedroom apartments.

Both projects have been put together by Cannock-based architects JAF Design.

A statement by estate agent DB Roberts says no expense has been spared in the development of the flats.

The estate agent said: “Martin Street Mansions is a stunning and prestigious development of select apartments located in the heart of Stafford town.

"With just nine properties within this Grade II-listed building, demand will be high.

“The developer has created a very high specification property.”
