George Galloway the last man standing in West Bromwich East
George Galloway says he is still up for election in the Black Country despite Tom Watson's decision to stand down.
The former Respect Party leader had been aiming to oust former Labour deputy leader Mr Watson in West Bromwich East, standing on a pro-Brexit, pro-Corbyn platform.
And he says he is raring to go, even though his opponents appear to be falling by the wayside.
Mr Watson's decision to quit as an MP prompted another candidate, Harvey Proctor, to pull out of the race.
He had vowed to oppose Mr Watson over his role in the Carl Beech scandal.
Mr Galloway, who was kicked out of Labour in 2003 over comments he made regarding the Iraq war, wrote on Twitter: "So in West Bromwich East I’m the last man standing!
"The Tories haven’t nominated a candidate and the Labour candidate has withdrawn. It’s day one of the general election. Does this mean I have a bye?"
Mr Galloway is due to begin his election push at an event on Friday.
It starts at 7pm at West Bromwich Working Men’s Social Club, Dudley Street.
