Councillor Stacie Elson has now left the Walsall Conservatives Group following her formal resignation on Tuesday, May 6, the reason behind the resignation has not been confirmed.

Councillor Elson, an ex trade union rep, was first elected to represent Willenhall North in May 2021.

In November 2022 she was appointed portfolio holder for children’s services at Walsall Council.

Changes to the cabinet members at Walsall Council are under way but the authority said no information would be made available until after Annual Council on May 21.

On Friday, May 2 an internal vote took place to decide on the new leader of the conservative group, and therefore the new leader of the Tory-led council.

Councillor Mike Bird, who was leader until he resigned last year following a suspension from the Conservative Party, had hoped to stand for the position of group leader.

But it is understood that Councillor Bird was deemed ineligible to stand, and the existing leader, Councillor Garry Perry was not contested.

Councillor Elson has been approached by the Local Democracy Reporting Service for comment.
