Speaking at PMQs, Boris Johnson pledged to help the 'great city' of Wolverhampton thrive.

The Prime Minister said the city will benefit from more than £200 million in growth deal funding, with thousands of jobs created and new homes built.

During PMQs he was pressed on his pre-election pledge to support deprived areas by Wolverhampton South West MP Stuart Anderson.

WATCH the response here:

Mr Anderson said: "Pre-Covid, the Prime Minister has made a firm commitment to reaching to some of the most deprived areas and level up the country.

"This is needed now more than ever. Will he make a firm commitment... to Whitmore Reans, Chapel Ash, Penn Fields and the rest of Wolverhampton, so they won't just survive, they will thrive?"

Describing Wolverhampton as "a great city", Mr Johnson said: "I certainly will.

"For starters, Wolverhampton will benefit from around £217 million of the growth deal funding across the Black Country which aims to create 5,000 jobs, 1,400 new homes and £310m in public and private investment."

It comes after council bosses warned that the city was bracing itself for an "oncoming economic storm" caused by the pandemic.
