Dudley councillor suspended over 'Islamophobic and sexist' tweets
A councillor has been suspended after he was accused of posting Islamophobic and sexist comments on social media.
Councillor Colin Elcock, who represents Norton on Dudley Council, posted tweets claiming Islam was “domination not integration”, and asking whether people in Iran were “all on the dole”.
He also responded to what appears to be a porn bot tweet of a women’s buttocks, commenting: “Bloody hell wow! Hello”.
Councillor Elcock has been suspended from the Dudley Conservative Group for 21 days following a meeting of officials this afternoon.
A formal group meeting will be held on Saturday, January 25 to decide whether the councillor will face further disciplinary action.
The tweets, which were posted in recent days and have now been deleted, led to two complaints to Dudley Council’s standards office
Labour's Pete Lowe, a former leader of the authority, Labour councillor has called for Councillor Elcock to resign.
Dudley Council leader Patrick Harley said: "The 21-day period allows local Conservatives and CCHQ to consider the suitability of Councillor Elcock holding a position which is representative of the party.
This type of conduct does not reflect the values of the modern Conservative Party."
