Odds slashed on Gavin Williamson to be next Tory party leader
Odds on Gavin Williamson becoming the next Tory leader have been slashed following his alleviation to Defence Secretary.
And he has also been described as a 'Prime Minister in waiting'.
The South Staffordshire MP had been 40/1 to succeed Theresa May but the price was cut to just 9/1 yesterday.
Ian Marmion, director of Trading at BetStars said: “Michael Fallon’s resignation in the wake of the current scandal circling Westminster has opened the door to the Conservative Party’s Chief Whip Gavin Williamson, with the 41-year-old MP for South Staffordshire being named the Secretary of State for Defence.
"However it looks like Williamson could be destined for greater things, with his odds of becoming the next Conservative Party leader slashed from 40/1 to 9/1 overnight with Boris Johnson and Amber Rudd remaining joint favourites at 6/1, closely followed by David Davis and Jacob Rees Mogg at 13/2 and 8/1 respectively.
"With the Conservative Party in disarray amidst parliamentary scandal and deadlocked Brexit talks, it would be no surprise to see Williamson leading the Tories in the near future, with many knowledgeable figures in Westminster already describing him as a Prime Minister in waiting.”
