Sir Bill Cash 'not happy' as Tory MP Anne Marie Morris uses racist term
Sir Bill Cash said he was 'not happy' after a Conservative colleague used a racist term during a Brexit event.
The Stone MP was sat alongside Anne Marie Morris – the MP for Newton Abbott in Devon – when she described the possibility of the UK leaving the EU without a trade deal as a 'n***** in the woodpile'.
National media reported that Sir Bill and Tory Wokingham MP John Redwood did not intervene after Ms Morris's comment at the East India Club in London today.
Sir Bill said: "I’m not happy at all with that sort of expression. I think that’s all I can say. The panellists were making their own comments in their way.”
When asked if he wished he had intervened at the time, he added: "Each person was making their own comments and we had to get off for another meeting. I can only say that I was not happy with the references."
Ms Morris later said the comment was 'totally unintentional' and apologised 'unreservedly for any offence caused'.
The Conservative Party later confirmed she had had the whip withdrawn.
Announcing the suspension after meeting with Government Chief Whip and South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson, Theresa May said she was "shocked" by the "completely unacceptable" language.
"I immediately asked the Chief Whip to suspend the party whip," the prime minister said in a statement.
"Language like this has absolutely no place in politics or in today's society."
