In typical make-do-and-mind style, trestle tables were hastily thrown together in the street, dining chairs were commandeered, and a good time had by all.
Today such events require road closure orders and the consent of the local authority, but back in 1945 there were no such worries, and besides hardly anybody had cars.
Many events, such as the one pictured in Hollyhedge Road, Walsall, were real family affairs, as reader Philip Aldridge who supplied the picture, testifies.
Philip, who now lives in Wednesfield, was born three years after the picture was taken, there are no fewer than five members of his family in the photograph.
On the right, holding a jug, is his mother Florence, who was 20 years old at the time. Just in front of her, third child from the front, was her niece Beryl Mountford, and Florence's mother Elizabeth is second from left, wearing a green cardigan. Just behind her, in the green pinafore dress, is Florence's sister, Gwendoline Mountford, while just visible at the back, with white hair, is their grandmother, known only as Mrs Peakman.
Absent from the picture, though, is Philip's father Ted, who was still away with the Royal Navy, serving on the submarines in North Africa.
"He would tell me about how they would have to stay silent while taking depth charges, and releasing torpedoes onto any U-boats that were in the vicinity," says Philip.
"When you look back at that generation, the constancy and determination, they were the greatest generation ever."
Elsewhere in the region, effigies of Hitler were burned on the bonfires, and there were high jinks in Queen Square Wolverhampton as revellers climbed atop the Prince Albert statue.
Over at Wolves' Molineux stadium, the celebrations took a more formal tone, with the mayor leading a procession of the Home Guard.
