Ian Crozier started grooming the girl before moving on to physical abuse, a jury at Stafford Crown Court heard.

Years later the girl tried to commit suicide.

Crozier, aged 55, of Coppice Road, Rugeley was convicted by the jury of a total of seven charges of sexual assault and attempted rape.

Recorder Miss Abigail Nixon labelled his behaviour towards the girl as 'depraved'.

"Your need to satisfy your sexual urges has led a young girl to try to take her own life," she told him.

"You left her feeling ashamed and guilty. You took away her innocence. You acted deliberately, you groomed her, starting with dirty magazines, then stepping up to pornographic films.

"I don't suppose for a moment you stopped because of how she felt, but probably because she was likely to speak out.

"Throughout this case you have shown no remorse whatsoever. Not only have you put her through a court case, at no time have you exhibited any distress about how you sexually abused her over a period of time."

Crozier denied all the offences but was found guilty after a trial.
