Bewdley's flood defences are in full swing in the Severn-side town as river levels continue to rise. They are due to peak in Bewdley and Stourport late Wednesday morning.

Videos show the defence systems erected alongside the rising river, while water levels can be seen overflowing public bins as locals can do nothing except wait to see the extent of the problem.

The river level at Bewdley and Stourport has been steadily rising all week after downpours further upriver. As of 7.45am it had reached 4.14m and is due to peak at about 4.20m at 11am, according to the Government website

4m is the threshold for possible property flooding.

It follows continued flood alerts and warnings which were put in place across parts of Staffordshire and the Wyre Forest, with flood defences going up, as the region deals with the after-effects of Storm Bert.

The storm had brought heavy rain and winds across the weekend, with a flood warning in place on the River Severn near Bewdley, coming after the flood defences went up on Monday and with a warning from the Government Floodline about rising water levels around Beales Corner.

The area, which has been a regular site for flooding in the town, has been predicted to flood again after the flood barriers were not set to be deployed due to the construction of the Flood Risk Management Scheme, with water levels predicted to be up to 4.3 metres overnight.

A spokesman for the Floodline website said: "As previously communicated, the Barriers at Beales Corner will not be deployed due to the construction of the Flood Risk Management Scheme.

"The predicted peak at Bewdley will be from 3.9m to 4.3m overnight tonight into tomorrow morning, on Wednesday, November 27. The River Severn level at Bewdley was 3.57 metres at 10.30am on Tuesday, with property flooding possible when it goes above 5.00 metres."
