Mark Saville will drive his 1957 Series 1 vehicle along the line from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster as part of the railway's Steam on the Road event.

Known as Plimsoll, the vehicle has a 1997cc four-cylinder petrol engine, a four-speed main gearbox and a two-speed transfer box with selectable four-wheel-drive.

The wheels are custom built, costing £2,500 and take around an hour to replace the regular road tyres.

The vehicle has operated on the Foxfield Railway, North Yorkshire Moors Railway and Bluebell Railway, and will be able to add the Severn Valley Railway to its list during the summer.

Steam on the Road takes place on August 12 and 13, and will showcase steam on the road, and steam on the rails.

Mr Saville, who is assistant editor of Land Rover Owner International magazine and lives in Northampton, said: "I've shared news I'm doing the route and expect quite a few people to come out and watch."

He added: "I got the idea from what I call the Thunder Birds days of Land Rover when they were trying everything for their vehicles.

"This was one of the ideas. I bought the vehicle for £1,400 and have since spent around £15,000.

"I love it. You hit speeds of 25mph, but it feels like much faster. And there is no steering, of course."

Mr Saville, who has owned the vehicle since 2002, has also taken driven it in Iceland, Switzerland and the Arctic Circle.
