The incident began just off Strawberry Lane in Wednesfield at around midnight last night, with six fire crews sent as the blaze escalated.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "The fire was adjacent to a garage. A large amount of plastic and two heavy goods trailers were alight.

"Due to it being so close to the railway a representative from Network Rail also attended to make sure the site was safe.

"We had a total of 15 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and four main jets were used.

"Gas and electrics were isolated. A crew from Fallings Park will be at the scene again this morning. We received the initial stop message at 4.42am."

Pictures posted on Twitter by West Midlands Fire Service showed orange flames soaring into the sky as they tackled the blaze.

Residents took to Twitter to say they could hear 'loud bangs' during the commotion.
