Homes to be built on site of former Bilston Leisure Centre
New homes will be built on the site of the old Bilston Leisure Centre after Wolverhampton council approved the scheme.
The leisure centre in Prouds Lane had featured a 33m pool, squash courts and snooker tables but was closed in 2011.
It was demolished the following year and has been a derelict site ever since.
Now the council’s own housing company, WV Living, has the green-light to build 40 homes on the land.
There had also been plans for the same number of homes on a neighbouring playing field, but these were dropped following a public outcry.
James Comer, aged 32, of nearby Nightingale Place, organised protests against the playing field scheme.
Speaking following the latest development, he said: "Although there was opposition to losing the playing field, everyone wants the old leisure centre site to be developed as it has just been derelict since the demolition."
Bilston Leisure Centre was built in 1964 and was home to Bilston Swimming Club.
It was replaced by Bert Williams Leisure Centre, off the Black Country Route, which opened in 2011.
