In the meantime, access is being maintained through the main door on the west of the church, overlooking the Civic Centre.

Extensive restoration has been taking place to the chancel of the Grade I listed building since last year, and is expected to continue until spring next year.

The church, which hosts Wolverhampton's civic functions, as endowed by Lady Wulfrun in 994AD, although it was extensively rebuilt in the 15th century.

It was originally dedicated to St Mary, but was renamed St Peter's in the 12th century.
