Wolverhampton pub wants to build 'outdoor lounge'
A 177-year-old pub which recently reopened after being closed for years has submitted plans to create an 'outdoor lounge' extension.
The Ash Tree Bar and Grill in Dudley Road, Wolverhampton, has applied to build 560 sq ft enclosed seating area at the rear of the pub.
The pub, formerly The Old Ash Tree, reopened last year as an Indian-style grill, after plans were approved to turn the upper floors into flats, and to build a side extension to include three commercial units.
It had been closed since the coronavirus lockdown in 2020.
The latest application is for a covered seating area to the rear, with retractable glazed walls which can be opened during the summer months.
A statement by architect Avinash Parmar, on behalf of the applicant, said the proposed changes would have little impact on the street scene, and would not affect the character of the area.
"Its contemporary style will complement the modernisation of the pub, as granted under the previous planning approval and be congruous to the modern feel of rendered walls and grey fenestration," he said.
Mr Parmar said the extension would take up three spaces on the rear car park, but these would be replaced, meaning there would be no net change in parking provision.
The pub dates back to 1848, and had a large bowling green to the rear. It brewed its own beer up to 1930 and the Williams family owned the pub for 53 years before selling to Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries in 1945.
