Two taken to hospital after crash causes 90-minute delays on M54
Two people were taken to hospital after a crash which closed the M54 eastbound on Thursday morning.
Traffic was later released between junction 3 for Albrighton and junction 2 for Wolverhampton following the crash, but National Highways in the West Midlands said one lane remained closed past the scene of the collision and delays of 90 minutes remain.
A spokesperson for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said two people were taken to hospital for further assessment following the crash.
They said: “We were called at 7.49am to a road traffic collision involving a car and a van on the M54 between junctions 3 and 2 in Coven, Wolverhampton.
"Two ambulances and two paramedic officers attended the scene.
"Upon arrival we found two patients, a man who was the driver of the van and a woman who was a passenger in the car.
"Both were assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained non-life threatening injuries.
"They received treatment at the scene before being conveyed to New Cross Hospital for further assessment. No further patients required treatment.”
In a tweet on Thursday morning, National Highways said: "Traffic has been released on the M54 in Staffordshire eastbound between J3 and J2 following a collision."
They said emergency services are on scene .
"Lane one remains closed past the scene.
"Thanks for your patience. 90 minute delays remain."
The M54 eastbound carriageway was reported to be at a standstill after a morning rush hour crash.
AA Traffic News tweeted that the crash was first reported at 8.25am on Thursday and traffic was stationary between J3 for Albrighton and J2 for Wolverhampton.
National Highways said: "The M54 in Staffordshire is currently blocked and experiencing severe delays of 90 minutes eastbound between J3 and J2 near Wolverhampton due to a road traffic collision.
"Staffordshire Police and emergency services are currently in attendance and are hoping to release traffic shortly."
They added that road users are being diverted via local routes.
"If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted that it was a minor road traffic collision but the road was closed while the emergency services dealt with the incident.
It posted: "Minor RTC involving three vehicles junction 3 to 2 Eastbound M54. Currently closed eastbound whilst emergency services deal with this incident. Please avoid if possible."
National Highways in the West Midlands tweeted that the M54 in Shropshire was blocked eastbound between J3 and J2 due to a collision and emergency services are on scene, adding: "Thanks for your patience."
One westbound motorist said: "It was queuing for at least two miles. "It looked like a crash between a car and a van. An ambulance was on the scene. I passed it just after it happened."
Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service said three fire appliances including the rescue tender were mobilised from Telford Central and Wellington with an operations officer at 7.45am.
A spokesperson said: "At 07:45am on Thursday, , SFRS Fire Control received a call reporting that a road traffic collision had taken place."
They found one car, one van and one large goods vehicle had been involved in collision.
Crews used small gear to deal with the incident before sending their incident stop message at 8.21am.
The AA Traffic News website said: "All lanes stopped and stationary traffic due to crash on M54 Eastbound from J3 A41 Newport Road (Albrighton) to J2 A4510 (Wolverhampton).
