New year, new baby! Hospital’s first 2021 arrival returns home
A couple are getting used to life as new parents after their first child arrived just in time for the new year.
The first baby to be born at New Cross Hospital in 2021 was Roman Gray Hulme, weighing seven pounds 11 ounces.
He is the first child of David Hulme, aged 31, and Lexi Shinton, aged 27, who now live in Tong, near Shifnal and both work at Porsche on Stafford Road.
David, originally from Bushbury, said: “She went into labour at midnight on New Year’s Eve and had a water birth.
"All of the windows were open and we could hear and see all the fireworks going off. He was born at 0.21 am, it was all quite surreal.”
Due to current restrictions, the couple’s families have only been able to have a glimpse of the new arrival from a distance.
David added: “The pregnancy and birth has been what has got us both through lockdown, and it has really given us something to look forward to.
“We have managed to see family at a distance, we have been for a walk with some of them but not let them come too close or come to our house.
“I didn’t know if I would be allowed into the hospital or not when she was in labour, but luckily I was and got to be there from the start to finish which I’m really happy about.
“The whole experience was brilliant, especially given the situation we were in, the hospital and midwives were all amazing.
“I can’t fault New Cross Hospital at all.”
