The loyal customer was chosen to perform the socially-distanced honours at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care in Dudley Street, Wolverhampton, and received a gift voucher and flowers as a thank you.

Mr Baker, who gets to branch appointments by himself, said: “I was a bit startled and wondered why they would choose me. They have got to know me over the years.

"I have dealt with Scrivens since I moved to the Midlands. They have all been first rate and always very polite and very efficient.”

London-born Mr Baker moved to the Midlands in 1983 and lives in Wolverhampton.

He worked all his life in the gas industry, aside from six years’ wartime army service.

He started as an apprentice and retired as a technical officer in charge of apprentices’ training.

Branch manager James Hartree said: “We wanted to mark the opening in style and George was an obvious choice.”
