The mother of two sleeping children had not gone to bed when the fire started at the address in Leicester Street, Whitmore Reans, shortly before midnight, so she woke the youngsters and took them into the back garden where the trio waited with a visitor who was also at the property.

Firefighters from Wolverhampton and Fallings Park stations were sent to the scene and a breathing apparatus team entered the address through the front door which had been left unlocked.

Wolverhampton Watch Commander David Nail said: "Smoke was coming out of the top bedroom when we arrived. The fire was in the kitchen and had been spotted by the mum who alerted ourselves and got the children out of bed.

"They and a family friend were outside at the back of the property when we arrived. Fortunately there was not too much damage but it might have been a different story had it had started a few hours later."

The fire is thought to have been started by a small cooker on a work top that had not been switched off and the heat generated by the device set light to the cupboard above it.
