WATCH: Ruddy, Radzi and Gabby get pupils moving in Wolverhampton

Sport presenter Gabby Logan, Blue Peter’s Radzi Chinyanganya and Wolves goalkeeper John Ruddy were at St Luke’s Aided Primary School in Blakenhall, Wolverhampton, on Tuesday afternoon as part of a BBC Sports Personality of the Year roadshow event.

Hundreds of kids were wowed by the famous faces – and even more impressed when they were shown the glittering Premier League trophy.

Wolves mascots Wolfie and Wendy also attended and earned the loudest cheer of the afternoon, during a special assembly in which the children were shown the benefits of being active.

It was all part of the ‘super movers’ campaign, a partnership between the BBC and the Premier League.

Several schools in the West Midlands have been visited in recent days, with West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa also helping to promote it.

Blue Peter presenter Radzi, from Wolverhampton, said: “The premise is to get kids moving more, feeling better, performing better in schools and feeling better in the process.

“I think a lot of the time the West Midlands gets overlooked and it’s great that Sports Personality of the Year is being held in Birmingham this year.

“Sport can be most exclusive at times – perhaps if you’re not the most coordinated, or didn’t pick up sport at an early age, you can feel as those it’s not for me. This is the opposite, it’s totally inclusive.

“It’s nice to see football in the media for the right reasons and promoting a message that will help get kids moving. We’re trying to inspire.”

The primary school youngsters took part in a 40-minute assembly in which they asked questions to their celebrity guests and also danced and clapped their way through reciting multiplication tables.

Renowned TV presenter Gabby Logan, who will present Sports Personality of the Year next month, said: “It’s important to get the message to these kids when they’re so young, you have to have that educational level and get those message cemented at a young age.

“If you’re talking to teens it’s almost too late because their patterns are formed.

“We have to do something about this unbelievable epidemic of obesity, the levels are quite frightening.

“You don’t want kids to be thinking about serious problems like health. It’s about them moving and not having sedentary lives.

“The teachers love the programmes because of that element of fun.”

Fellow sports presenter Emma Saunders added: “The message is that it’s all about being active, we don’t necessarily mean going out and playing sport. It’s about being active anywhere they can, walking to school or your dog.

“It’s been fun getting them moving around but it’s about helping them with their learning as well.

“We had West Bromwich Albion with us yesterday, today it’s Wolves and tomorrow Aston Villla.

“The children have been absolutely loving that connection, when you see your idols practicing what you preach, it encourages you to do it.”

St Luke’s headteacher Alison Grennan said she was grateful to Wolves for helping inspire her youngsters.

Wolves were originally formed at St Luke’s back in 1877 and the school still has a strong link with the football club.

“To see the Premier League trophy, to meet people like Gabby and Radzi, it’s something they’ll never forget,” she said.

“They absolutely loved the whole thing with John, Wolfie, the Premier League trophy, it was all fantastic.

“I’m desperately trying to get some of our children to support Wolves.

“The lads in year six say they support Arsenal and Man City – we want them to support their local team!

“Days like today will definitely help.”
