Part of the A449 will be closed overnight

Lengthy diversions will be in place when the Stafford Road is closed in both directions from its junction with the M54 heading north up to the Harrows pub at Standeford.

It will bring yet more misery for motorists who have had to content with months of roadworks on the A449 either side of the M54 junction.

Highways England said the stretch was being closed for layby, road marking and signage works.

The closures will be in place from November 4 and continue daily between 8pm and 6am. Vehicles will be diverted along the M54 and A5.

Some overnight closures have been in place this week southbound towards Wolverhampton for preparation works, which has sent traffic diverted through Coven. The closures are due to last until December 8.

Councillor Wendy Thompson, who leads the Conservative Group in Wolverhampton, said she had sympathy with drivers who were having to negotiate yet more roadworks to get into the city.

She said: "Drivers become extremely frustrated at having so many hold-ups. They just want to get from A to B and the amount of times we come across these roadworks - they are everywhere.

"The companies need to get the work done as quickly as possible at the most convenient times for residents. So much congestion is caused by these roadworks. It is a main arterial route and is absolutely crucial."

The closures north of Wolverhampton come as an 18-month roadworks scheme continues the other side of the M54 in Fordhouses. Traffic has been funnelled into a single lane on both sides of the carriageway near the the Porsche garage, causing major disruption.

That part of the Stafford Road has been widened and right turning lanes added to improve traffic flow and ease congestion worsened by the creation of the i54.
