Road closed on safety concerns after gas explosion damages windmill
A road has been closed today on safety grounds alongside a landmark windmill which was damaged in a gas explosion.
The windmill, based on Windmill Lane, in Castlecroft, Wolverhampton, was blown apart by the explosion around 7.30pm on Saturday.
A man who lived in the property was inside when the blast happened but he is understood to be uninjured.
It is believed the explosion may be related to the windmill's boiler, according to West Midlands Fire Service.
Wolverhampton Council this afternoon confirmed Windmill Lane would be closed due to fears that it could collapse.
The council said: "Windmill Lane has been closed in both directions between its junctions with Castlecroft Lane and The Church of the Good Shepherd due to concerns that the old Windmill damaged by a gas explosion at the weekend could collapse into the road.
"Traffic diverted via Castlecroft Lane, Castlecroft Road and vice versa. The council will be working with the owner of the windmill to make the building safe so the road can be reopened as quickly as possible."
