Man killed after being hit by car in Stafford Road crash

An elderly man has died after being hit by a car on a major route in Wolverhampton which 'failed to stop'.
Police confirmed a 19-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after handing himself in.
The crash happened on the A449 Stafford Road close to the Goodyear island by the Aldi supermarket on Monday night.
Investigating officers say a white car hit the victim, a man aged 80, at around 6pm.
Ambulance service officials said a car failed to stop at the scene between Oxley Moor Road and Mercury Drive.
Passers-by helped perform CPR on the victim as ambulance staff arrived.
But he was confirmed dead at the scene.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, Murray MacGregor, said: “He had suffered very serious injuries.
“The man was assessed by ambulance staff but sadly, it quickly became apparent that there was nothing that could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.
“There was no car at the scene.”
A blue tent was erected by police at the crash site with the city route inbound closed for several hours in the aftermath.
Part of the road remains taped off this morning.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "The car left the scene and later on a 19-year-old man handed himself in to a police station.
"He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody this [Tuesday] morning."
