A driver emerged miraculously unscathed after losing control of his car, which then mounted a pavement and smashed into road signs and trees before ending up on its side just inches from a resident's front door.

The man was travelling along Dovedale Road in the Woodcross district of Wolverhampton when his Vauxhall Astra hit two road signs and some trees before the car overturned, taking out part of the garden wall and smashing into a car in the drive, badly damaging it.

Police, fire and ambulance services attended following a 999 call.

Office worker Dave Walker, who was visiting his brother in the street, was first on the scene. He said: "How nobody has died, or even got hurt, I don't know. No one can believe it."

He had been talking on the phone when he heard the sound of a crash just after 8.30pm on Thursday and ran out.

"I couldn't see anything at first because of where the car ended up. I ran down and saw the driver get out of the upturned passenger side and jump out.

"I asked him if he was all right. He seemed okay but he was clutching his stomach."

The cars had been travelling on Dovedale Road, a 30mph zone, towards the A459 Wolverhampton Road.

Residents say it is the third incident of its kind in the road in six months. They have petitioned the council but say nothing has been done.

In the first collision, a car careered into a garden after demolishing the fence while in the latest incident, a car mounted the pavement and came to a halt in someone's drive.

The Astra driver, believed to be in his early 20s, was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital for further checks
