Suspected burst water main on Cannock Road

Severn Trent Water has apologised to road users after the mishap at the junction of Park Lane and Cannock Road in Wolverhampton.

Workers dug up one metre square hole in the road after suspecting a leak on Saturday, introducing three-way traffic lights.

But since then, the company discovered there was no burst water main.

Workers are now repairing the road, with completion expected tomorrow night.

A spokesman said: “We’re really sorry if our traffic lights at the junction of Park Lane and Cannock Road are causing any inconvenience.

"We were alerted to a potential leak, and as we take leakage very seriously, and to make sure water supplies for our customers are not affected, we had to investigate fully.

“We’re happy to say that it appears there is no leak after all and customers can continue to rely on us to provide water for a cup of tea or hot bath whenever they need it.

“We’ll be working hard to get the site repaired now, and we expect everything to be back to normal by tomorrow evening.”

A road user who did not wish to be named said: "Having already experienced heavy traffic on a regular basis heading towards Wolverhampton on the Cannock Road, these lights have add insult to injury with an extra 20 minutes added to my morning compute.

"Detour signs would be helpful."
