New measures have been brought in to protect fans arriving at the ground as part of wider anti-terrorism initiatives in Wolverhampton.

Permanent security barriers are due to be installed near Molineux early next year.

In the meantime a series of temporary road closures are being introduced on match days starting with the visit of Villa this afternoon.

Wolves urged fans to arrive in good time ahead of the 5.30pm kick-off.

West Midlands Police were also giving travel information for away fans travelling into the city centre.

They were urging fans to consider using the train with Midland Metro trams currently stopping outside the city centre due to the track replacement works in Bilston Road.

Road closure information

Waterloo Road will be closed from the roundabout leading to Asda supermarket up to the traffic lights at Newhampton Road from 90 minutes before kick off, up until a period at the discretion of the Matchday Safety Officer at the end of the game. Wolves expect that to be between 15 and 30 minutes.

For Molineux Street at the junction with Camp Street and Sir Hayward Way/Sir Jack Hayward Way opposite the Stan Cullis Car Park kiosk/Top of Whitmore Hill. The road will be closed here from one hour before kick off, up until a period at the discretion of the safety officer, again expected to be between 15 and 30 minutes.

Bus service information

All bus services that usually run along Waterloo Road between Five Ways Island and Newhampton Road (including services that turn around in Jack Hayward Way) will be diverted along Stafford Street (in both directions) from 90 minutes before the start of a Wolves home match.

This will continue until clearance is given at the end of the match to re-open the roads and return to normal routes.

All diverted services will use the existing bus stops on the section of Stafford Street between Five Ways Island and the Ring Road.

Services 3, 4, 62 and 62a will continue into the city centre via the inner ring road section of Stafford Street.

The 5 and 5A will be diverted via Stafford Street, Ring Road St Peters and St Andrews, Chapel Ash Island and Darlington Street to continue into the city centre.

The changes will also affect midweek matches. The closures will apply at the same times in advance of all Wolves’ first team fixtures - league and cup.

In a statement, Wolves said: "Fans are always advised to arrive as early as possible for home games at Molineux, particularly with the new road closures.

"This is particularly important for Saturday's fixture against Aston Villa with a capacity crowd expected for the 5.30pm kick off."
