The advertising executive, who founded Beattie McGuinness Bungay, announced on Twitter that he had bought the items.

The hair accessories were made famous by actress Jean Alexander, who played the battleaxe between 1964 and 1987.

She died last year, and her nieces organised the sale at the Royal Clifton Hotel in Southport.

Film producer Mr Beattie, who bought the items for £4,200 at auction, said he may use them in a film called Hilda Ogden: The Movie.

He was formerly the chairman and creative director of TBWA London.

He said: "It is a really important piece of popular culture.

"It is like Charlie Chaplin's moustache or Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves.

"I'm hoping to open an exhibition of cultural icons and we may be making Hilda Ogden: The Movie so we'll see."

He tweeted: "I just bought Hilda Ogden's headscarf, pinny and rollers. As you do."

Mr Beattie was born in Birmingham and studied at Moseley School of Art. He later completed a degree in graphic design and photography at Wolverhampton Polytechnic.
