‘Super grans’ take on challenge in memory of father
Two cousins are preparing to tackle a mountain challenge, dressed as grannies in aid of a hospital.
Martin Jones, who lives in Willenhall, and his cousin Dan Smith, who lives in Cornwall, are planning to trek 36 miles, hitting the peak of Snowdon twice in one day to raise funds for New Cross Hospital’s Renal Unit in August.
The fundraiser is in memory of Glyn Jones, Martin’s father, who died in 2019, and also as thanks for giving him a lifesaving kidney transplant which helped prolong his life.
The lads are taking on the challenge dressed as grannies to help draw attention and as a comedic tribute to their fun-loving fathers.
Speaking about the challenge, Dan said: “This challenge is a way for Martin to feel closer to his dad. Martin is tough guy and I know that his loss has struck hard. I’m proud to call him family.
“Back in the day, our dads used to be a big part of the New Cross Hospital bed push.
“We both lost our dads within a couple if months of each other and they were the best of friends. Doing a charity challenge really does help us both feel like we’re doing them proud.
“Mountains are where heaven meets Earth, so when we’re at the top we will have a chat with the old men and hope they’re looking out for us and feeling proud.”
Martin added: “My dad was in the Renal Unit at new cross for many hours after his kidney transplant failed, luckily they found another match which worked.
“If it wasn’t for the unit I wouldn’t have been able to make great memories with him from 1990 until 2019.
“I am forever grateful to the staff at the renal unit. This is my way to give back and say thank you.
“Dad, this for you.”
