The silver hatchback, which is completely unrecognisable after the blaze in the Black Country yesterday morning, has been left gutted.

No one was trapped in the car or injured when it was allegedly torched just before 4am. West Midlands Fire Service sent one crew from Bloxwich fire station to the scene of the rear of Glastonbury Crescent in Mossley, Walsall.

Firefighters had to use breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to tackle the flames, which also caused smoke to billow out into the air. Firefighters remained at the scene for more than three hours.

A spokesman for WMFS said: "We had a phone call at 3.58am. One car was well alight on the land to the rear of houses of Glastonbury Crescent.

"Two breathing apparatus wearers and one hose reel jet were used to tackle the fire. We closed the incident at 7.08am."

The spokesman added: "One crew from Bloxwich attended, which totals five firefighters. No one was in the vehicle when the fire started."

The spokesman could not say whether the fire was deliberate or not, but Bloxwich fire station took to social media to claim the fire had been an arson attack.

The station tweeted just after the incident had been closed: "Even a quick response to an early hours fire call couldn't prevent family car being totally destroyed by arson."

Alongside the tweet was a stunning image showing a firefighter battling the blaze. He can be seen with breathing apparatus on firing water towards one of the car's doors as the flames are well alight and smoke billows out from the car.

Other pictures posted by the station show the car after the fire having been completely gutted. Everything is burnt out inside and it has no windows.

West Midlands Police is investigating the arson.

A spokesman said: "It is being treated as arson and anyone with information can call police on 101; quoting crime reference number 20WS/117059Y/17."
