Walsall Council's planning committee had previously rejected Churchill Retirement Living's proposal for 41 apartments and four retail units at High Street, Aldridge.

But the committee has now approved scaled down plans for 37 apartments and two units, providing the council and the applicant can agree on a Section 106 proposal.

The building would be four-storeys tall at its highest point.

A total of 24 parking spaces will serve the 37 flats but Councillor Mike Bird has raised concerns that this will not be enough.

He said: "This is a site long over due for development and has been like this for 20 years, but I do worry about the lack of parking in the area."

Ahead of Walsall's planning committee meeting, planning officers had recommended the plans to be approved.

A report prepared by the council said: "Officers have met with the applicant’s agent and worked closely in response to concerns raised regarding the previous scheme to enable full support to be given to this amended scheme."
