The super-tip, officially named the Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station, is set to replace the current Waste Recycling Centre at Merchants Way, Aldridge. The Merchants Way site will remain open until the new facility is ready.

In the most recent update, the council said it expects the works to be completed at Middlemore Lane in summer 2025.

The station will have the capacity to process 40,000 tonnes of rubbish per year across 19 bays, each housing two skips. Much of the energy needed to run the facility will be offset by solar panels which will be installed at the site.

A reuse shop will provide staff with space to refurbish items that would otherwise have been thrown away. The items, all in good and safe condition, will then be sold at a low cost.

The project coincides with improvement works at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Fryers Road in Bloxwich

Councillor Kerry Murphy, portfolio holder for street pride, said: “The progress on the site is absolutely brilliant to see. The new Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station will ensure we can continue to provide services for our ever-increasing population in the borough.”

Councillor Adrian Andrew, deputy leader and portfolio holder for economic growth and regeneration, added: “It is great to see how things have moved forward on the site, the progress from waterlogged land to how it looks now is very impressive.

“This site will serve the borough for many years to come and will play a vital role in delivering a cleaner and greener Walsall.”
