Arson attacks at two Walsall play parks to cost taxpayer £95k

A children’s climbing apparatus and rubbish bin were set alight at King George V Playing Fields and part of the Reedswood park playground was also destroyed by fire.

The big bill comes as Walsall Council tries to save £28.9million to balance the books for next year’s budget. The very selfish acts of a few have been condemned on social media. 

Jane Ann said the vandalism is ‘sickening’: “I’m gutted for all the children who loved it and for the council who keep trying so hard to make our parks a lovely place to go. It’s gutting for all of us paying our council tax to pay for these things.”

Sarah Brown added: “What joy do idiots get out of doing this? It’s for kids. Some parents must be so proud of their kids. Nothing will probably get done as per usual.” 

Walsall Council has called on the community to take a stand against antisocial behaviour, by reporting any suspicious activity and encouraging individuals to consider volunteer opportunities in parks and green spaces. 

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing at Walsall Council, said: “We want everyone to take pride in the borough and pride in their surroundings. I would encourage residents to consider how they can support their local parks and green spaces.

“We also need everyone to take a stand against antisocial behaviour. If you become aware of any criminal damage or vandalism or have information about suspicious activity, please report it to our Community Protection team or the police.
