Applicant Robert Kraus has put forward the proposal for Wardley News, based in Bradford Place by the Cenotaph in Walsall, which previously sold newspapers, cold drinks and sweets.

If approved, the kiosk will become known as Busway Bites and promises to sell “high-quality” French hot dogs, muffins and coffee.

Walsall Council planning officers are expected to make a decision on the proposal for the kiosk, which the applicants said closed earlier this year, in August.

In a heritage statement, the applicants said: “Wardley News has been an integral part of the Walsall bus station for many years, providing newspapers, magazines, and confectionery to travellers and locals alike.

“The kiosk has been a steadfast presence, witnessing the evolution of Walsall and adapting to the changing needs of its patrons.

“Its strategic location at the bus station is particularly significant, as this area has been a central hub of activity and transportation in Walsall.

“Wardley News contributed to the vibrancy and functionality of the bus station, making it a reliable stop for daily commuters and visitors.

“Wardley News played a crucial role in the community beyond its primary function as a newsagent.

“It served as a social gathering point, a place where people could interact, share a moment, and stay informed. This small yet significant establishment fostered a sense of community and belonging among its patrons.

“The kiosk’s contribution to the local culture lay in its ability to offer a welcoming and accessible environment, providing comfort and convenience to all who passed through the bus station.

“The decision to maintain the location at the Walsall bus station underscores the importance of continuity and heritage.

“The bus station itself is a historical landmark, integral to the town’s daily life and its transportation network.

“By remaining at this site, Busway Bites ensures that it retains its historical connection with the community.

“This continuity is essential for preserving the kiosk’s role as a communal touchstone and maintaining its historical significance.”
