Crash on M6 causes miles of congestion after woman suffers medical emergency

A woman motorist was left needing hospital treatment after appearing to suffer a medical emergency behind the wheel.

The woman was involved in a collision with a van on the M6 southbound carriageway between junction 10 for Walsall and junction 9 for Wednesbury at around 9.05am.

The collision caused two lanes to close while crews from National Highways and West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene.

The ambulance crews assessed the woman at the scene for potentially serious injuries and conveyed her to Walsall Manor Hospital for further treatment.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called just before 9am to a road traffic collision involving a car and van on the M6 between junctions 10 and 9 in Pleck.

"One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

"Upon arrival, we found a woman who was the driver of the car who is believed to have suffered a medical incident at the wheel.

"She was assessed and had sustained potentially serious injuries.

"She received treatment at the scene and was conveyed to Walsall Manor Hospital for further treatment.

"No further patients required treatment.”

One lane was later reopened at 9.55am, with around five miles of congestion on the approach to junction 10, with the full southbound carriageway reopened just after 11.01am

A spokesman for National Highways West Midlands said: "Two lanes were closed on the M6 southbound between junction 10 for Walsall and junction 9 for Wednesbury due to a collision

"There is approx five miles of congestion on approach which is adding about an hour to normal journey times.

"Long delays remain, but they are easing."
