'Not in the real world': Walsall councillor concerned over school uniform costs
A Walsall councillor believes schools are not in ‘the real world’ when it comes to costly uniform demands of hard-up families.
While the summer term ended just over a week ago, Councillor Pete Smith, independent member for Blakenall ward, said parents will already be fretting about the costs they face to get their children ready for September.
And he urged struggling people to access possible support from a number of charities who can assist with school uniform bills.
Many can assist eligible residents with the cost of clothing, school trips, educational resources and even other items such as white goods and furniture.
The charities highlighted are The Walsall Wood Allotments Charity, The CC Walker Charity, The Fishley Charity, The Blanch Woollaston and WJ Croft Charity.
Councillor Smith said: “The schools have broken up for the summer holiday but many will be struggling with the cost facing them in the new term, especially school uniforms and other educational necessities often demanded by many schools.
“A few schools seem not to be in the real world when it comes to the costly list of items required for each student.
“These are often costly specially customised items like badges, ties and particular special clothing items in school colours.
“And these are often with restricted suppliers and possible deals done between particular suppliers and particular schools."
Councillor Smith added: “Sadly, gone are the days when the council provided clothing grants to the children of low income families.
“However there is some limited help out there in the form of certain charities administered by Walsall Council.
“Yes, there are a few hoops to jump through and a form to fill in but it may still be worth doing.”
