The toddler was taken to hospital with a head injury after being struck on High Street at around 2.30pm on Tuesday but it is not thought to be life-threatening.

A 45-year-old man was arrested in nearby Lichfield Road on suspicion of driving while unfit and failing to stop at the scene.

An air ambulance landed near the scene but it was decided to take the boy to Walsall Manor Hospital by land ambulance.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We sent one ambulance, a paramedic office, the Midland Air Ambulance from Cosford and the Midland Air Ambulance critical care car.

"One patient, a male toddler, was treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening. He was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital by land ambulance."
