Rough Wood Chase and Fibbersley Local Nature Reserve, both in Walsall, have been cleared up thanks to volunteers from Willenhall-based A.F. Blakemore & Son.

The food retailer has got staff to volunteer as part of its 100th anniversary plans. More than 500 staff took part across the country including more than 100 who litter picked at Rough Wood Chase and Fibbersley.

Mark Holden, the head of clean and green services at Walsall Council, said: “I’m so grateful to everyone who has taken the time out of their busy working week to help clean up their community. I would like to thank all volunteers for all their help; they have made a real difference to their local environment and their community.”

Liz Bell, the community affairs officer at A.F. Blakemore, added: “I am delighted to see the work our volunteers have achieved this week.

"As a business with strong links in the local community, it is great for our employees to get out of their normal work environment and work as a team. I believe that volunteering in the community is a fantastic way for our employees to learn new skills that they can take back to the workplace and I would encourage more businesses to get involved.”

Fibbersley Nature Reserve is looked after throughout the year by volunteer group Friends of Fibbersley.

Clive Fletcher, the chair of the group, said: “I was so pleased to hear A.F Blakemore wanted to get involved in helping clean-up our countryside. Having more volunteers really does make a difference - the team have done a fantastic job and have contributed significantly in areas we struggle to maintain and for that, I am very grateful.”
