Elderly man airlifted to hospital after Walsall hit-and-run

Police are attempting to track down the driver of a Mercedes believed to have been involved in a hit and run in Walsall today.

Officers were called to Lichfield Road in Rushall, Walsall just after 11am where an elderly man, believed to be in his 80s, sustained severe head injuries and was air-lifted to hospital.

Detective sergeant Paul Hughes from the regional collision investigation unit said: "The car has been described by witnesses as a light coloured, convertible Mercedes displaying reg number MJ52 0VM.

"Due to the impact we believe the car will have sustained extensive windscreen damage.

"We urge anyone who has any information on the movements of this vehicle before or after the collision to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

"I also want to appeal directly to the driver to do the right thing and come forward."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said the man had suffered very serious injuries to his head, chest and left ankle.

The road was expected to remain closed between its junctions at A454 Mellish Road and B4154 Daw End Lane until 4pm.
