Road to close as highway improvement work in Stafford moves into next phase

The highway improvements under way include the widening of the pavement to create a shared cycle and walking space, as well as new crossings and improvements to the public area.

The next phase of the works will see the resurfacing of South Walls starting on April 9.

To ensure that the work can be carried out safely, the road will remain closed.

Drivers looking to access Stafford Borough Council and the Riverside Car Park should do so via Bridge Street and past the enforcement camera which will be switched off.

This phase of the project is expected to take eight days to complete and once finished, traffic management will revert back to allowing access via Eastgate Street and Cope Street.

James Bailey, assistant director for highways and the built county at Staffordshire County Council, said: “This is an important project for the town which will improve the look and feel of the area, while making it easier and safer for people walking and cycling.

“Our highways crews continue to do their best to minimise any disruption to the travelling public and we want to thank people in advance for their co-operation.

“Once complete, the new shared space will offer an excellent facility for both cyclists and pedestrians and will help to boost foot flow and regenerate that part of the town.”
