Officers from Staffordshire Police were called to the Picture House Wetherspoons pub on Tuesday at around 2pm.

The discovery of several bones was made during construction work.

Eddie Gershon, a Wetherspoon spokesman, said: “There had recently been a flood at the pub and workmen were on site dealing with damage.

“We were doing some excavation under the floor of the pub in front of the bar where flood water came in. During this one of the workmen discovered a large bone.

“We stopped work in this area. More bones were then found close by.

“We contacted the police – they came – they believe it is connected to an old monastery building at the rear of the pub.

“Police have taken the bones away for analysis and work has stopped until the force comes back to us.

Examined

“The officers have confirmed they are old bones.”

A spokeswoman from Staffordshire Police, said: “Police attended a premises on Bridge Street in Stafford at around 2pm on February 2 after a number of bones were discovered during construction work.

“They will be examined but at this time they are believed to be animal remains.”

This incident comes just weeks after the pub was flooded for the second time in a little more than a year.

The popular Bridge Street pub suffered another setback after heavy rainfall led to flooding for a second time. Firefighters were called out to the venue to help pump out the water.

The former cinema was bought by JD Wetherspoon in 1997 and the building is an essential part of Stafford’s heritage, dating from its original opening in 1914, as a silent film cinema that screened films up until the 1990s.

Part of the pub's recent refurbishment work included the full restoration of the historic plaster ceiling.

The site had been completely stripped back, with a new kitchen, cellar and toilet facilities installed.

The recent flood damage affected the area in front of the bar.
