Work to extend Stafford Castle Golf Club on Newport Road has lasted for seven years but there is now light at the end of the tunnel for fed-up residents. Workmen could be off the site within weeks.

Luddington Golf Ltd has been working to extend the golf course from nine to 18 holes but there has been anger over how long the scheme has dragged on.

Residents have complained about trucks coming to and from the golf course and say the development has had a negative impact on the area.

But now the finishing touches are being put to the extension.

Stafford councillor Carolyn Trowbridge said the end of the project would come as a relief to people living nearby.

She said: "They are bringing in top soil to finish it off. They are starting to get it moving in the right direction and it is finally moving in the right direction. It has been driving everybody mad for the last seven years.

"I believe they will be off the site within the next couple of months. When it gets finished we will have a new golf course and it will be a prime area of Stafford to live."

Luddington Golf Ltd has put the delay down to the impact of the recession and because it has had to import materials from overseas.

The development has been surrounded by major controversy due to the length of time it has taken to complete. The Residents Association Stafford group hit out over what they called "devastating impacts" last year.

The golf club also apologised over a foul smell coming from the site during the building work, which is first got permission for back in 2008.
