Former Express & Star offices make way for Stafford’s new multi-million pound cinema complex
Work to clear the way for Stafford's multi-million pound cinema complex is well underway.
The old Express & Star office building in Bridge Street is now in the process of being flattened.
A digger has moved on to the site this week to pull the bricks down from the back of empty building.
It will pave way for the the new six-screen Odeon at the county town's £70 million Riverside complex.
Scaffolding went up around the front of the offices last month
The facade was originally meant to be retained as part of the plans but an amendment to the planning application was made to Stafford Borough Council to bring it down.
It comes after the derelict Chicago Rock Cafe and Love2Love nightclub next to the Express & Star have already been demolished.
The cinema will accommodate 800 seats and two restaurants will be built under the plans.
The likes of Chiquito, Nando’s, Prezzo and Coal Grill and Bar are still set to come to the area.
The current Stafford Cinema, around 100 yards away at the junction of Lichfield Road with Bridge Street and Newport Road, has been put up on the market.
